What is meditation?
Meditation means to simply be. That is to be aware of the present moment and what is going on, it has a close relationship with self-awareness and self-knowledge. When you first start meditating you will experience thoughts and emotions that just come to your mind, you do not have to identify or think why these thoughts are coming or what the thoughts are, you just have to witness and observe them as they come and go. As you delve deeper and deeper into your meditation you delve from your conscious mind into your subconscious mind where your true nature lies where years and years of programming have been fed to it which results in how you think, how you behave and how you act. You might not realize these patterns at first glance but as you meditate and gain experience while meditating you will truly understand what your patterns are and how to reprogram them to help you function to your optimum and healthy level.
First of all, meditation is not concentration. Concentration is when you take an object. Example, I take a remote and I’m just focusing my attention on it and my constant thoughts are focused on it. What is a remote? How is it made? My experience with it etc.
This is not meditation, its concentration. It is similar to meditation and It’s a very strong tool to enhance your mind to make your mind strong but it’s not meditation. But what is meditation, meditation is not an Indian term. The root of meditation comes from the word Dhyana which is an Indian term.
Dhyana means consciousness, awareness and observation. Now what is the difference between concentration, observation, and witnessing the consciousness. What is the difference? Now I have explained what concentration is. When we take the topic of consciousness or awareness you are conscious of your breathing, you are conscious of your heartbeat, you are conscious of the environment you are around, you are conscious of the sounds, you are conscious of your climate, the consciousness is spreading like a river throughout. This is consciousness and awareness.
There are many types of awareness, that is passive awareness and active awareness, but I had to make it clear to you that concentration is not meditation now you don’t have to go on sitting in padmasana or vajrasana and say I am not getting concentration, that is not meditation. Meditation is simply awareness and that you have to be completely aware in the present moment and be at peace with it.
